How QS Ranks Universities in Different Subjects:

QS uses five things to rank universities in the World University Subject Rankings. These are:
  • Academic Reputation
  • Employer Reputation
  • Research Citations Per Paper
  • H-Index
  • International Research Network

The first two indicators are global surveys of teachers and employers. These surveys measure how well-known and respected the universities are in each subject.

The next two indicators measure how much research is done and how important it is in that subject. The h-index shows how impactful and productive the research is. This data comes from Scopus, the world’s largest research citation database.
The last indicator shows how much a university collaborates with other institutions around the world on research.
