Today, Administrator Samantha Power told everyone about a new plan called the U.S. Government Strategy on International Basic Education (2024-2029). This shows that the United States still wants to help students everywhere gets a good education. This plan is a collaboration between ten departments of the U.S. government, including the Departments of Agriculture, Education, Defense, Labor, State, Treasury, Millennium Challenge Corporation and National Security Council. It also involves the Peace Corps as well as USAID.
Sadly, lots of students have big problems with learning. About 70 percent of ten year-olds in countries with not a lot of money can’t read a simple book. And less than 25 percent of students in those countries are doing well enough in school and life. Even with problems like COVID-19 and fights and other big problems stopping school, the U.S. government is helping more kids learn to read well in 15 countries, even during and after the pandemic.
The U.S. government wants to help other countries with their schools in three big ways: make learning better, let more kids go to good schools, especially students who haven’t had the chance before, and work together to make sure all this helps. They’re focusing on making learning better and giving good schools to everyone, especially students who haven’t had the chance before. They’re learning from the COVID-19 pandemic to make schools better for everyone.
In the last plan from 2019 to 2023, the U.S. government help over 34 million kid every year with their school in other countries.
Good education for every kid is really important to help countries grow and stay strong, and the people working on the plan still really want to make this happen. The programs from USAID are based on their Education Policy, which says it’s important to listen to people in the country, let them lead, and make their schools better.
